Allison Stokke and Alyce Caron
Allison Stokke one of the most successful Pole Vaulters in the world was born on 22 March 1989, in Newport Beach California United States. She began her career as a pole-jumper in 2007 following a photo taken at an event when she was 17. Instagram and Twitter have helped her build an enormous social fan base. Stokke is a track and field star similar to Jessica Ennis Hill. According to the Los Angeles Times among others that Stokke did not seek or advocate for this kind of attention. Brett Hutchins and David Rowe in Technology Power and Culture in the Network Society contrasted Stokke's circumstances with that of American women athletes in soccer, Alex Morgan and Hope Solo. They claimed that their sporting achievements were tarnished because of the demeaning and sexualization which was applied to their images. Stokke was also the subject of sexist comments on social media, and the authors blamed this sexualization process entirely on the women. Many others made parallels to Brandi Chastain's celebration after her victory at the 1999 FIFA World Cup Women's Final in her sports bra where women's sports events were often dominated by the discussion of their looks. Photos of Stokke, competing at the 2007 World Cup in New York early 2007, were posted on the web by a Californian journalist working on a track and field website. The image was then re-posted in the form of With Leather a sports blog with a massive male following remarking on the attractiveness of the 17-year-old Stokke under the heading Pole Vaulting is Sexy Barely Legal. Matt Ufford threatened to file a suit against the photographer in the event that the image wasn't removed. The image and the article had garnered lots of interest. Stokke's pole vaulting images were published on a tribute site. When the photos went viral via social media platforms, online fan clubs gained thousands of new followers.
